The earlier they start, the easier it is
We recommend a first visit by age one, or when the first tooth appears. Children who grow up visiting the dentist regularly are far less likely to develop dental anxiety or need complex treatment later on.
Why early dental care makes a difference
The experiences your child has at the dentist now shape their attitude to oral health for the rest of their life. Getting it right early pays off for decades.
Treatments we carry out most often for children
Most children's dentistry is preventive, designed to protect developing teeth and avoid problems later. Here are the treatments we provide most frequently.
A quick, painless application of concentrated fluoride painted directly onto the teeth. It strengthens developing enamel and significantly reduces the risk of decay, especially on newly erupted teeth that are most vulnerable.
A thin protective coating applied to the biting surfaces of back teeth, where decay most commonly starts in children. The sealant fills the natural grooves that are hard to clean, creating a smooth surface that's much easier to brush.
When decay does occur, we use tooth-coloured fillings to restore the tooth as gently as possible. Even in baby teeth, treating decay matters: it prevents pain, infection, and damage to the adult tooth developing underneath.
We monitor how your child's bite, spacing and jaw are developing as adult teeth come through. If braces or other orthodontic treatment would help, we'll identify the ideal time to start and arrange a referral to a specialist.
Falls, sports injuries and playground accidents are a normal part of childhood. We treat chipped, cracked or knocked-out teeth promptly, and can advise on custom-fitted mouthguards to protect teeth during sport.
Bring your child to St James Dental Surgery
Whether it's a first visit or a routine check-up, we'll make sure they feel safe, comfortable and happy. Children who enjoy coming to the dentist grow into adults who look after their teeth.
Parents ask us these most
Honest answers to the questions we hear from parents every week about bringing children to the dentist.
We recommend a first visit by the age of one, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits are relaxed and short, designed to get your child used to the dental environment and let us check that everything is developing well.
That's completely normal, and something we're very experienced with. We take things slowly, use simple language they can understand, and never force anything. Sometimes the first visit is just sitting in the chair and having a chat. We build trust at their pace.
Yes. Baby teeth hold space for the adult teeth developing underneath and play an important role in speech and eating. Untreated decay in baby teeth can cause pain, infection and damage to the permanent teeth waiting to come through. Early treatment is almost always simpler and more comfortable.
Fissure sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the biting surfaces of back teeth, where decay most commonly starts in children. The treatment is quick, painless and doesn't require any drilling. We usually recommend them as soon as the adult back teeth come through, typically around age six to seven.
Yes. Fluoride varnish is recommended by the NHS and dental associations worldwide for children from the age of three. The amount used is very small and is painted directly onto the teeth, where it strengthens enamel and significantly reduces the risk of decay. It's one of the most effective preventive treatments available.
We monitor your child's bite and jaw development at every routine visit. If we spot anything that might benefit from orthodontic treatment, we'll let you know and arrange a referral at the right time. For most children, the ideal age for assessment is between seven and nine, even if treatment itself starts later.
Of course. Parents are welcome in the treatment room for all children's appointments. For older children and teenagers, some prefer a little independence, and we're happy to follow whatever works best for your family.
The cost depends on the treatment needed. We'll always explain what's recommended, why, and how much it will cost before we go ahead. If your child needs more than a routine check-up, we'll provide a clear treatment plan so there are no surprises.
